Cute and cheery sandwich shop offers simple, traditional flavours done well.
This family-owned sandwich servery is reminiscent of old-school delis and seaside scoop shops, making it right at home in Fremantle. The design is clean and bright with large windows, exposed brick and staff in crisp, white crew-neck T-shirts, but it’s the fresh sandwiches that remain the main attraction here. Peggy’s well-crafted, well-conceived menu goes far beyond your average corner shop, with sandwiches built from the (mostly housemade) bread up with an eye for quality.
The fan favourite? It’s still the fried chicken schnitty with dill mayo and cheddar (add a side of chicken-salt-dusted fries to level it up), but the eggplant parm, featuring crisped eggplant, sugo and parmesan on focaccia is killer, too.
Breakfast might mean indulging with a heaty sausage muffin with oozy American cheese that riffs on the Macca’s staple, whereas the toasted Reuben, with sharp sauerkraut and “secret sauce” is a hefty lunch option. Drinks? There’s no booze, but a cold-brew or vanilla malt thickshake will hit the spot, but nothing hits with as much nostalgia as a Nippy’s Iced Chocolate popper – one to satisfy both kids and the young at heart. Just a few small tables and stools dot the interior and exterior of this busy grab-and-go joint, so order online to beat the queue, or go early to secure a seat and spend a moment alone with your sandwich.
