Southcamp

One way to describe Southcamp? It’s like a caravan park or campsite – only cooler.

After all, there aren’t many caravan parks that have their own brewhouse attached, or that serve cheeky Mimosas or Bloody Marys at breakfast. Perhaps a better way to think of Southcamp is that it’s like its own little Dunsborough indie village, where the days are lazy and the living is easy.

The 18 modern cabins are grouped cosily together and have everything you need and nothing you don’t. The king beds are roomy and comfy, there’s a nook for seating, and the bathrooms are remarkably spacious. They’ve even thrown in a record player to crank up the retro vibes. If you need to hunker down with more than just your significant other, there are also two family cabins with bunks and a couple of one and two-bedroom apartments. The latter feature fully equipped kitchens, laundries and balconies. A home away from home.

But forget the rooms; it’s what’s outside that’s the true lure. Start your day with coffee and pastries and – go on – that glass of sparkling at brekkie, then jump on one of the property’s electric bikes and meander down to the beach before coming back to camp for pints from the brewhouse, pizza or tacos and local live music. And when you’re done, your perfectly soundproofed cabin or apartment is waiting, so you can leave the party behind. ’Til tomorrow, anyway.

Need to Knows

  • 18 cabins (Standard, Family-Sized) and 2 apartments (One-Bedroom, Two-Bedroom).
  • Check-in 3pm; Check-out 11am.
  • Each cabin has a TV, Bluetooth speakers, free WiFi and coffee and tea facilities. Apartments have their own kitchens, laundry rooms, balconies and barbecues.
  • There’s an on-site grocer to pick up supplies.
  • Parking is free.

What’s There

In theory, your whole holiday could take place on-site: each of the eateries are open at different times throughout the day, there’s plenty of space for groups of any size, and you’ll find a rotation of live music and DJs at night. It’s a holiday inside a holiday.

What’s Around

One of the South West’s most beautiful sunset spots, Sugarloaf Rock, is a short drive away (keep a lookout for grazing kangaroos on the way). You’re also close to the famous Injidup Natural Spa and can jump on sections of the Cape To Cape Track.

What’s Super Special

If you think a standalone cabin is going to have a half-hearted shower, think again. The showers here have some serious pressure, which is no small feat of engineering. You’re also going to want to fork out on the very cool Southcamp merch – think t-shirts, caps and mugs in a coastal palette of eucalypt green, sky blue and sunshine yellow.

Children

There’s plenty of room for kids to run around the Brewhouse, with a central lawn that’s within eyesight of all the tables. They’ll also love the sandpit and table-tennis table in the shared space, and it won’t take them long to find board games and other fun stuff in each of the family cabins. For total togetherness vibes, the one- and two-bedroom apartments give everyone plenty of room to spread out, and include sofa beds.

Breakfast

The Café serves excellent coffee, toasties and pastries, and you’ve got to love that they bottle their own local fruit for muesli and the fruit syrup that tops fresh breakfast cocktails.

Eating and Drinking

The Brewhouse & Beer Garden is where you’re going to do most of your eating. There’s a selection of Southcamp beers on tap, as well as a good stash of wine and cocktails. Food-wise, it’s all easy-eating, holiday-friendly favourites like burgers, tacos, nachos and salads; if you only order one thing, make it the crazy-delicious prosciutto pizza. If you want to pull together a picnic, you can load up on deli items, snacks and wine at Dunn Bay Continental, which is also on-site. For a sweet treat, head into town for artisan ice-creams at Elski Danish Ice Creamery.

Things to Book

Get active by renting surfboards from Yahoo Surfboards or kayaks, SUPs and bikes from South West Boats and Bikes.

Notes

Unlike most accommodation in the area, the cabins have a no minimum stay requirement, which make them a cost-effective way to dash into town for a quick getaway or special occasions like weddings.
