Perth & Surrounds

InterContinental Perth City Centre

They’re not immediately obvious, but if you look closely, you’ll see them. Small, discreet details – such as squarish panels mimicking portholes – that remind guests the InterContinental Perth City Centre was once the site of a shipping company.

Thoughtful, design-centric elements like these make this 240-key hotel – with interiors by celebrated firm Woods Bagot – one of the most aesthetically pleasing properties in Perth. Art is at the heart of everything here, with more than 300 pieces on display, including standouts like the bewitching Forest Drift glass sculpture from Perth artist Gerry Reilly that floats like a flock of birds above your head as you enter the lobby.

This InterContinental outpost isn’t just a pretty face, however. There’s plenty of substance to back up the style, including the smartly organised suites – in tones of mushroom and gold – equipped with full-sized desks for working, and a well-appointed business centre. The team at Club InterContinental greet members by name and will organise your table to optimise it for a business meeting or personal moment of relaxation. Hotel dining, meanwhile, hits another level at Heno & Rey and Ascua, the two Spanish-inspired restaurants on-site, and the terrace bar overlooking Perth’s heritage precinct is no less exquisite.

It’s these little differences that make all the difference.

What’s There

The Gallery Meeting Suites are some of the most attractive conference spaces you’ll find at any one of the big-name Perth hotels, set out in a luxurious library-like space with objets d’art and thick coffee-table books. There’s even a collection of lolly jars in case you get the afternoon munchies. For something more substantial, there are two restaurants: the tapas-driven Heno & Rey, and Ascua, centred around a wood-fired grill. Starting or finishing the night with a signature cocktail at The Loft Lounge & Bar is certainly a treat as well – especially on Fridays, when live music plays from 4:30pm-7:30pm. It’s also worth opting for Club InterContinental access, which scores you all-day refreshments and breakfast served sky-high.

What’s Around

Take in a musical, dance or comedy performance at His Majesty’s Theatre, mere footsteps from the hotel’s front door, or ask the concierge about booking a cruise along the Swan River from Elizabeth Quay. The property is also a seven-minute walk from RAC Arena for sporting events and large-scale shows.

What’s Super Special

InterContinental Perth City Centre has a partnership with both the West Australian Ballet and West Australian Opera. The latter performs for three seasons annually at His Majesty’s Theatre, just across the street. Watch out for accommodation packages and even costume displays throughout the hotel during performance periods. And while options for late-night cocktails in the CBD are limited early in the week, The Loft Lounge & Bar stays open until midnight all seven days.

Children

Families find a great deal of comfort in the hotel’s component rooms, which tailor to the needs of kids and parents, with more space and the feeling of their own private apartment (without a kitchen). A request for these rooms can be made through the reservations team. Cots are also available, and in-room dining options include a children’s menu.

Eating and Drinking

Both of the hotel’s ground-floor restaurants take their cues from Spain’s culinary culture. Heno & Rey channels a fun, street-side tapas by way of sangria and small plates, while the more refined Ascua spotlights top-tier WA produce with Iberian accents. Up on level one, The Loft Lounge & Bar’s alfresco terrace has dreamy views across Hay Street’s historic rooftops. Call in at sunset and order a ‘Ballet Slipper’ cocktail to kick off a perfect Perth evening.

Things to Book

Be sure to book ahead if you’re looking to dine in-house at Ascua or Heno & Rey, especially if there’s something on at His Majesty’s Theatre next door. And while tickets aren’t required for the Lotterywest Federation Walkway, you’ll want to set some time aside for this stunning 620-metre walk through towering eucalypts in the nearby Kings Park and Botanic Garden.

Notes

The installation that hangs above the foyer will captivate you right away, but look a little to your left above the concierge desk and you’ll spot another exquisite work of art that many miss: an intricately carved she-oak trunk by West Australian woodturner Neil Turner.
